Presentation of Espelustrófico at UNAM’s Prepa 6

ENP 6, “Antonio Caso”, UNAM

Coyoacán high school, named after a prominent Mexican humanist.

I chose this campus because I am a graduate of the school and because in the last story of the book, my main character studies at this school.

Prepa 6 opened its doors in April 1959 in one of the annexes of the building known as “la Casa de los Mascarones” located at 71 Ribera de San Cosme Avenue in downtown Mexico City. Five years later, in February 1964, it moved to its new facilities on the streets of Corina and San Pedro, a few steps from downtown Coyoacán, a place that has always been distinguished by its cultural tradition.

Many of the most important national personalities have resided in this area and chroniclers tell that since the 19th century numerous and famous literary-musical gatherings were organized here, with the participation of writers such as Vicente Riva Palacio, Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, Juan de Dios Peza and José Peón Contreras, among others, which is why it was called at one time the “Athens of Mexico”. Special mention should be made of the talks on poetry and literature that the writer Salvador Novo, an illustrious inhabitant of the area, offered to the theater students of the UNAM.
